Drifting raffia bags are becoming an increasing threat in the Mediterranean

Every year, more woven polypropylene (raffia) bags are found drifting at sea. These bags can entangle sea turtles and other marine wildlife, while also posing a risk to navigation and sustainable fisheries.

If you encounter an entangled sea turtle, do not cut the line or the debris. Contact the appropriate rescue or maritime authorities immediately (Spain: 112, Malta: 9999 9505).

If you spot drifting raffia bags or other floating debris, report your observation to your local maritime authorities. Every report helps improve our understanding of marine litter and protect Mediterranean wildlife.
