PDF: Expeditions Tramuntana 2024
Meeting point: Sóller (Mallorca)
Join the ALNITAK team for their “OASIS” research campaigns in the UNESCO Heritage Site Serra de Tramuntana in the north of Mallorca, a mountain range that abruptly merges into the deep blue Mediterranean, a beautiful and unique setting for our project.
Our main objectives are marine research on dolphins and marine turtles, while tackling the threats to their habitat such as ghost fishing gear. We collaborate closely with local artisanal fishermen to improve their fisheries, while also expanding our ever-growing network of fishermen and sailors in reporting and retrieving deadly ghost gear (abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear which drifts at sea, and poses a serious threat to wildlife and people), as well as promoting correct turtle rescue.
Volunteers are quickly integrated into the team’s daily routines, becoming immersed in our ongoing marine conservation and research programmes while also experiencing a true Mediterranean rural lifestyle. On good days we will work on board Alnitak’s research RIB “T/T TOFTE” or the small artisanal fishing vessel “Passador”. Our base camp is a small traditional house in the mountain range, “Ca’n Canyelles” which we will slowly reform together.
This special “mountain & sea” setting means we will continually be active, in touch with the natural surroundings. Everyone shares responsibilities, from research tasks to cooking and cleaning. This is above all, a team project that wants to take advantage of each and every moment to be useful and productive.
This is a new project full of promise, which relies on volunteers like yourself to help us build. Our goal is that each expedition in 2024 leaves it’s mark, ensuring the continuity of this “Tramuntana” base camp and conservation projects for years to come!
